I recommend this movie if you like romantic comedy movies. You'll be happy that you got it.

Professor Matthew Pinsker has an interesting (cautionary) critique of Goodwin's book, Op-Ed section 11/18/08 LA Times: "Lincoln and The Myth of Team of Rivals." He offers some good points to keep in mind while enjoying the book. The three stars are what Pinsker might have given, maybe four.

It's a great movie for a guy who just endured a chick flick with his girl. It puts manhood back in you!

Black Hawk Down-Blu-ray
5/28/2007
I'm previewing the Blu-ray version of this film.

Video: picture quality was slightly above average with some grain in dark parts opf the movie. In other part of the movie, the picture appeared really sharp and Hi-Definition-like. Overall quality was good, but not very consistent throughout the whole movie. I viewed this movie on Hi definition projector with 101" screen on the new Samsung BD-P1200.

Audio: Slightly above average

Finally, it's worth mentioning that the image froze only once, but still that seems to be a common and annoying problem with Blu-ray discs. Cleaning the BD with a microfiber cloth help sometimes, but it takes away the fun if you have to take out the BD and clean it, then put it back in the machine and wait for it to load and then you have to go to the selection menu and try to figure out where you were before the disc froze.

Keeping it real
5/20/2007
Having served, I appreciated the reality with which Black Hawk Down was presented. For example, the Ranger falling to his death because he missed the repelling rope as the Black Hawk maneuvers to avoid enemy fire, demonstrates an unavoidable mishap. For me this movie reveals some of the subtle and rarely talked about realities soldiers face daily. It also showcases some of the overlooked political realties. Conflict is conflict; but real combat is a major advantage for real life guerilla fighters. Yes, our soldiers are well trained, but nothing prepares a soldier for combat like combat. Our soldiers do not have the opportunity to fight as much as militia fighters; yet we are always fighting battles in our enemy's backyard which creates a distinct disadvantage for our soldiers. It usually hurts our militaries reputation. And we always underestimate their (third world guerilla fighters) level of experience. We usually fail to take them serious until they kill one of our soldiers. This arrogant American mentality puts our soldiers at distinct disadvantage. In one of the scenes the Ranger commander disagrees with the Delta Forces Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge (NCOIC) and subsequently reprimands him by telling him, "you are combat ineffective soldier!," for disobeying his directive in front of his subordinates. This may have been the most realistic depiction in the entire movie. Anyone who's been in the Army knows that Delta Force soldiers are on an elite level rarely seen in any military setting and if you want to live you and should put your ego aside and listen to them. It's not that I recommend or condone disobeying orders; I think experience trumps egos and egos should be set aside during stressful situations. The narcissistic infighting of arrogant leadership may be the military's most lethal killer....of American troops! Ironically, one of the most pronounced differences between the experienced and not so experienced combat soldier, is the level of compassion with which they approach life. Those soldiers that have experienced combat shy away from bravado, while those that haven't actually seen war seek the glory of the stereotypical brave man. This overlooked aspect of military life is rarely exposed. "It's amazing what could be accomplish if it weren't for ego's," Ronald Reagan. The U.S. will always be called upon to help other nations with their political mishaps. And don't discount the difficulties NATO Forces have communicating with each other. But at some point we're going have to learn to be painfully selective. Don't we owe it to the parents of the young men and women who are, were and will be killed or maimed, to produce tangible results from these skeptical overseas missions? I'm sure they would think so. It's condescending of us (the US) to downplay the patriotism of the families of our nation's fallen soldiers by casually selecting insignificant international political targets. Black Hawk Down not only successfully salutes the soldiers involved in the Somalia experience with it's authenticity, it succeeds in showing the audience the always ugly and chaotic circumstances our soldiers face while in the exercise of heated international conflict.

great movie, stunning pic quality
5/13/2007
im sure most of us already know the movie but what comes as a pleasant surprise is the sharpness afforded by the HD transfer. every pore on the face and every bead of sweat jumps right out at you! in fact, anything with texture - war ravaged walls and rocks are all brilliant crisp and tactile. the bonus is the behind-the-scenes making of documentary (pretty long) which is very comprehensive and could be a video on its own. highly recommended.
