You can also use the HotSpot @Home service via most open, or unsecured, wireless routers, as well as any secured wireless router for which you have access to the password from the owner. This phone is compatible with the 802.11b/g Wi-Fi standard as well as with Wi-Fi security protocols including WEP ,WPA and WPA2. Phone Features
The BlackBerry Flip presents a sophisticated look with a sleek design and a chrome-finished frame surrounding its smooth, luminescent face. Weighing 3.6 ounces, the Flip has two light-sensing LCD screens--an internal 2.3-inch 65K-color screen (240 x 320-pixel resolution) and an external 65K-color screen with a 128 x 160-pixel resolution. The external LCD makes it easy to preview incoming emails, text messages and phone calls without opening the handset. It can also display currently playing music track information, and the screen darkens after a pre-assigned time-out duration. The phone has an internal 128 MB memory, which can be expanded via microSD/microSDHC memory cards up to 16 GB in size.

More than just an email companion, the Blackberry Flip also offers a media player, 2.0-megapixel camera, and Wi-Fi connectivity--compatible with T-Mobile's HotSpot @Home. See larger version.
Opening up the clamshell reveals the Blackberry Flip's unique alpha-numeric keypad, which has been brough over from Blackberry's popular Pearl models. Each button on the keypad shares two letters and the unit automatically determines which letter is the intended one based on what it predicts you are trying to spell. This unique predictive text technology, known as SureType, makes the Blackberry Flip's diminutive size possible. SureType also learns the words you use most often, further enhancing your typing speed.

With BlackBerry push technology, you don't need to retrieve your e-mail. BlackBerry devices are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network, allowing you to be discreetly notified as new e-mail arrives. Support is also built-in for viewing e-mail attachments (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, and PDF formats).

You'll be able to easily access up to 10 supported personal and work email accounts, send and receive text and instant messages, and connect on popular social networking sites with friends, family and co-workers. The DataViz Documents to Go software suite is also preloaded, allowing you to edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files directly on the handset. The BlackBerry Flip is supported on BlackBerry Internet Service, BlackBerry Unite!, BlackBerry Professional Software and BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which provides tight integration with corporate email systems.

Surf the Internet with the BlackBerry Browser, which includes a "Page View" option that displays a full web page on the screen along with a magnifying glass that allows the user to quickly and accurately point and zoom in on a specific area of the web page. It also provides quicker access to Bookmarks and History.

This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity, and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, audio/video remote control, and sending of vCard calendar and contact info. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. With Voice Activated Dialing (VAD), you just say the word and the 8120 can initiate a call with anyone in your contact list. Plus, you can use VAD along with the built-in speakerphone or with a Bluetooth headset for hands-free dialing.

With an advanced media player for displaying pictures, listening to music and watching videos, the Flip is the perfect on-the-go entertainment center. Videos play smoothly on the large internal display, playlists can be managed directly on the handset, and there's an equalizer with 11 preset filters. The BlackBerry Flip also works with the new BlackBerry Media Sync application that makes it easy to sync iTunes digital music collections with the smartphone. It's compatible with a wide range of music file formats, including MP3, WMA, AAC/AAC+/eAAC+ and AMR-NB as well as MPEG4, WMV, and H.263 video clips.

The external screen displays incoming calls as well as currently playing music tracks and a clock when at rest. See larger version.

Pearl 8220 is a bad paper weight at best

9/24/2009

After a phone and sim card replacement I still have service issues. T-Mobile rep told me that it is like a computer and the battery and sim card need removed once a week.

I gave up playing some of the games preloaded on it because they would lock up the phone and you would have to remove the battery.

Try entering a number to quick and it skips the first # entered.

There are other bugs I just cant think of right now.

Worse Blackberry ever

7/30/2009

I totally hate this phone. I wouldn't advice anyone to buy this phone. This was the worse phone I've ever bought, two weeks after I bought it; it started to freeze. I'd be in the middle of calling someone and the phone would stop functioning; then I would have to take battery out to restart it. If you're looking for a decent blackberry phone THIS ISN'T IT, DON'T BUY THIS PHONE...

Nice Phone

7/14/2009

Since I'd always wanted a BlackBerry but wasn't too crazy about the candy bar designs (I've always been a flip-phone fan), I jumped for this model when I saw it.

The first Pearl Flip I received had a real startup problem. It would suddenly restart itself every 5 or so minutes. I took it back and got a replacement, and the new phone doesn't seem to have this problem.

Pros:
1) Good looking phone. I love the analog clock.
2) Reception is as good as a home phone.
3) Photo and video quality is pretty decent.
4) The music/video player seems very good, but is the sound kind of tinny when coming thru the phone's speaker, but I guess that's to be expected.
5) Transferring files between the phone and computer is pretty painless.

Cons:
1) The battery is cheap.
2) The phone's browser is slow.
3) It's pretty much impossible to dial 1-800-LETTERS since it's a QWERTY keyboard you're working with.
4) Definitely would be nicer if it had a full keyboard, but I guess you can't have everything.
5) Unless you have the patience of the devil, this phone will probably drive you insane. I always tell people: unless you want to spend time figuring this phone out, don't get it. This is the only electronic in history that actually had me reading the manual.
6) Doesn't have a great processor: multitasking slows the phone down quite a bit, playing music slows the phone down quite a bit... even dialing is sluggish.
7) Takes FOREVER to start up.
8) The screen is a bit small, and it's kind of annoying that they took up screen space to put their logo.
9) Some of the games on the phone are kind of... weird. Word Mole sometimes doesn't accept perfectly decent words, and does accept certain profane words, and Brickbreaker kills me if my ball hits the side of the paddle (the Brickbreaker on my previous phone was very good about bumping the ball as long as it hit the paddle).

It's pretty obvious that this is the first generation of the Pearl Flip. There are many glitches and issues that RIM has to fix up. Also, I would recommend that this phone be recharged every night... as I said before, the battery is disgusting.

Overall, I'm enjoying the phone, and so far it's been a pretty good phone.

Don't Buy It

BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 Phone, Black (T-Mobile)

Don't buy this phone. Don't do it. The technology is not ready and T-Mobile provides horrible support for the phone's many weaknesses.

Main problems:

1) Too fragile. SIM card becomes dislodged or requires resetting quite often.
2) WiFi - connectivity under the WiFi environment is sporadic. Do NOT rely on WiFi connectivity for phone calls. Your calls will be dropped. End of discussion. I have used this phone, with WiFi, at my 2 residences. Both are in moderate to major population areas and with "excellent" signal strength. The WiFi was the reason we bought these phones and have subsequently killed the service (T-Mobile charges you extra for this poorly delivered option).
3) Dropped calls. Dropped calls. Within the cities of Chicago and Albuiquerque.
4) Bluetooth malfunction. Check the forums. Bluetooth fails inexplicably and will not re-enable. T-Mobile offers only to replace phone with same model.
5) T-Mobile's effective support on this phone is to either a) have you spend hours and hours wiping the phone and reinstalling the software, applications and entering your various user data. REMEMBER...this is a smart phone. Like a computer, you will spend a good bit of time setting the thing up, that is, if you use it for more just a phone. T-Mobile's other support effort is to b) have Blackberry replace the phone.....similarly requiring gobs of your time to troubleshoot, coordinate and then set-up the replacement device.
6) Internet e-mail. My wife's phone inexplicably lost the ability to access her online e-mail. T-Mobile's suggested solution.....wipe the phone and start over. If that doesn't work (many of YOUR hours later) they'll get Blackberry to replace the phone.
7) Battery life is VERY short.
8) Browsing the phone's features is very slow. The phone reacts sluggishly to your inputs....including just dialing phone numbers. I am endlessly having to go BACK on command entry because the lag in response time caused me to sleect the wrong entry item.
9) Browser speed is slow. I mean slow to unusable. I tend to run online searches for places and things using the Google Maps application. That may sound silly, however, it's much faster than using the basic browser function on this phone.
10) In a nutshell, Blackberry is beta-testing this underpowered, previously untested smartphone and we are the guinea pigs. Nice idea packinking the PDA into this attractive little phone, however, they're not there yet. T-Mobile simply diverts all responsibility for the poor performance of the device to Blackberry.....and you.
11) Don't buy it.

The Truth on the BlackBerry # 8220

6/11/2009

Don't buy this phone. It might be the worst BlackBerry ever. I just sent back my THREE phones for credits (all had same type problems) and got the new BlackBerry Curve #8900 thats great so far. The #8220 looks great, the two screens (inside and out) are very nice. The music player plays great and some other things look super. But it's the worst phone you can have. I went through 5 new different bluetooth headsets that worked poor. I took them all back and quit on Bluetooth and then TWO top tech guys tell me this is a big issue with this phone and all my headsets were not a problem at all. The voice quality can't be worse overall. One day last week I had 42 dropped calls in a row. And the last 40 were to T-Mobile trying to get things fixed but before I got past their long and boring opening greeting, it dropped about 20 plus times right there and with some nice reps who called me back, my calls dropped 1-4 times with those SAME reps. The phone either just drops the call or after a bit you get static and then you can't hear the other party but they hear you saying HELLO about 100 times before the call then drops OR the other persons voice comes back bad with static. But not for long. The battery is very poor. Without making many calls I was down to two bars left so I had to recharge for the next day every day and of course thats worse on the battery. And don't play songs on this phone. The songs sound fine but that battery again will go down much faster. It's a very poor battery. I kept losing my wallpaper and ring tune songs every time you change phones or the tech people tell you something to do to fix things, well these two features you paid for go away. And you have to fight like heck to get T-Mobile to send them back. And after a few times of this, they won't sent you YOUR own property anymore or give you credits. Unless you call them 1000 times and make a big deal about it over and over. And in some cases they did send back my stuff but somehow it never got to my phone but sure enough I had a charge for all that and had to fight to get credit there too. There were about 5-6 more things wrong but enough is enough. It's a very very slow phone for everything you want to do. And that lousy pain in the you know what hour glass, well that thing is always coming up with almost every move you make and when thats on the screen for a bit, nothing else can happen for you. So it's even slower then. These are the most important issues. So forget that it looks great, it's a BlackBerry Flip and has a couple of other nice features you see right away. Even the honest T-Mobile reps and T-Mobile BlackBerry reps say it's a bad phone and they don't tell anyone to get it. They stay away from it. They get a list of a phones issues so they know what to tell people and this phone has some big issues. Get the new Curve #8900 from T-Mobile. Now that one is working perfect. And it's so much faster and cleaner than the #8220 you can't even compare them. It's not even close. You heard of the words lemon and dog ? Well you have one here. Now with this review, be smart.
