Professor Matthew Pinsker has an interesting (cautionary) critique of Goodwin's book, Op-Ed section 11/18/08 LA Times: "Lincoln and The Myth of Team of Rivals." He offers some good points to keep in mind while enjoying the book. The three stars are what Pinsker might have given, maybe four.

Product Description:

Cut carrot sticks, chop celery, and slice jicamma for an hors d'oeurves platter with this chef knife from Chicago Cutlery. Chicago Cutlery has 75 years of experience, crafting top-notch knives since 1930. The Forum chef knife exemplifies this tradition, while modern in design. The wide 8-inch chef knife proves indispensable, tackling most every chopping, dicing, mincing, and slicing task.

Chicago Cutlery crafted the chef knife in high-carbon stainless steel for increased hygiene and permanence. The construction resists rusting, staining, and pitting while maintaining sharpness. The blade undergoes Chicago Cutlery's special Taper Grind edge process to ensure the sharpest edge possible upon initial use, as well as through years of maintenance. For greater balance and strength, the chef knife benefits from a sturdy, forged full bolster. This chef knife features an ergonomically friendly, grooved stainless-steel handle. Preserve the knife's effectiveness by sharpening the blade at a 20-degree angle on a sharpening steel regularly. Wash the knife by hand and dry immediately. For user safety, stow the knife in a storage block or affix to a magnetic strip. Chicago Cutlery offers a lifetime guarantee for all knives in the event of faulty materials or workmanship. Upon shipping, this item weighs one pound --Jessica Reuling

comfortable, cool, sleek , sharp knife!

This at $9.99 was a great buy! Will do the job. Sharp blade, very cool feel in hand and fits hand nicely, cleans up easily without food getting stuck in places where normal knifes have parts glued or bolted together. I did cut finger tip with it, so watch how you handle it.
No need for more expensive knife, however, to do ordinary chef knife jobs.

Rustoleum...
6/5/2008
I was not impressed with this knife. It was not amazingly sharp when I first used it, and after I washed it following its first use, it rusted! I dried it and it still rusted!! There are rust spots everywhere, and the knife is as dull as my commentary. I do not recommend this knife. It is of poor quality. Save the money and get something better.

Good, but not great
5/17/2008
I realize that this review is going to be an opinion, rather than a statement of fact. However, as much as I like this knife, (and it has many good things in its favor), I still strongly prefer my Wusthof Trident chef's knife, which feels like an extension of my hand.

I have very tiny hands and this knife, although it has a fairly short blade, has a fat handle, which makes it slightly difficult to control with tiny hands, especially when those hands are greasy or dirty from cooking.

I found the steel that is the material used in this knife is slightly harder than that in my other chef's knives (Wusthof, Henckel's Zwilling, and Sabatier). That makes this knife harder to sharpen. It arrived nicely sharpened, and a few flicks of the steel was all that was required at first. But when it came time for the sharpening stone, this knife took considerably more time and effort than the others.

The Integrated handle is what sold me on this knife - no seam to hold dirt, and a nice, clean look. In reality, food became stuck in a groove between the knife part and the handle part, negating the use of one material.

One huge plus is the incredible price offered by Amazon. They charge almost nothing for this knife, especially when you consider the prices of the Sabatier, Wusthof and Henckels. If you want a nearly perfect knife for peanuts, by all means buy this one. If you already have one of the famous-for-a-good-reason chef's knives, this one brings nothing new to the party, and you will likely be dissatisfied.

exceeds expectations

Great knife. I read other reviews on here that said the knife was dangerously sharp. That is not the case it is just a good sharp knife. It slices through onions quick enough that you do not have time to tear up. I just wished that I bought the whole knife set instead of the single unit.

great knife but watch it
1/25/2008
This is my first high quality knife, and i love it but i have a piece of advice, BE CAREFUL because when it arrived i opened it and while washing it before use i slipped somehow and sliced myself real nice, it wasnt bad, no stitches or anything, and you want a sharp knife just be real careful and take the time to learn proper cutting and knife safety. But if your looking for a nice sharp knife for a great price id recommend this knife for sure
