Ink Problem is a deal killer

3/18/2010

As the other posters have mentioned, this printer does not let you print with just black ink, and in fact the software won't even let you try to print if it senses you're out of ink.

It's absolutely terrible... I have a flight tomorrow and can't print out boarding passes. It won't even *try* to print with what's left in the cartridges. And, even though I have ink in the black cartridge, that won't work because it requires color to print black.

Do yourself a favor and don't buy this printer, or support this company.

Problematic Printer

3/14/2010

I was given this printer by my sister, who got it free with a new computer and did not need a second printer. At the time I was excited, because it seemed pretty fancy, but since then I have had so many problems.
First, the good things: the print quality is decent, it prints quickly, and when working correctly it is easy to use.
Now, the problems: Ink. It seems to gobble it. I have never had to replace cartriges as frequently as I do with this printer. Also, the fact that you cannot print at all (even black and white, text only documents) if any of the four colors is low is downright frustrating.
Another problem -- unlike any other printer I've used, it does not recognize three-hole punched paper. Whenever I try to use it is says "paper jam." I bought a whole package of the holed paper so I could print things and place them directly in a binder, and the only way I can get it to work is by putting the pages in backwards, with the holes facing the wrong way, which looks about as stupid as you'd think once it's printed out. What a waste.
The scanning option was hard for me to set up and figure out initially, but after having a computer expert friend walk me through it I got it to work and have not had subsequent problems with that feature.
All in all, I must say I would NOT recommend this product to anyone. There are many much, much better printers available. I wish I had one.

Shame on you Epson

3/10/2010

Do not buy this printer. In fact, do not buy any Epson printer. And if you did buy this printer, don't give them another cent by buying their ink. As mentioned in a number of reviews, if you do any amount of printing, you'll spend 10 times as much on ink as you spent buying the printer. And, even if all you do is print black and white, you'll need to buy color cartridges to keep the thing working. My Epson is going to the dump. What a waste of resources. SHAME ON YOU EPSON.

Do not buy Epson printers.

3/8/2010

Functionally, this printer does a decent job. Setup is easy. Scanning software is bad. Copy feature is very easy to use.

The printer management software bundled with this printer must be designed to sell ink cartridges because it's clumsy at best. You'll be amazed at how quickly this printer starts reporting that Epson cartridges are empty. Visual inspection generally shows you that the cartridges still have ink. When I install the cartridges from this printer into another model, I get three times the life out of them. ...the same cartridges that the CX7400 reports as empty.

Worst part is that once the printer claims to be out of ink, the unit will not function without replacing the cartridges. If a color cartridge reports empty, you cannot even print in black. Even if you change the print settings to black text, Epson's bundled software immediately changes the settings back to full color so that you cannot print without replacing the color cartridges. Scam. I've owned several Epsons but this will be my last.

Frustrating set-up, unfriendly software/driver

2/27/2010

This is an incredibly frustrating printer. Came packaged with my Dell. Have tried on two different occasions to get it set up properly and it has yet to print one page satisfactorily. The software doesn't give you much troubleshooting help once the thing decides to refuse your print job. (There is a link to go online for help, but there's no attempt at providing the consumer with a real diagnostic option, one where the unit is sending info to the computer as you try to figure out what the problem is.) I'm not computer illiterate and have managed to cope with many different printer set-ups -- but not this one. (One small but irritating detail: They've hidden the place where you plug in the USB almost an inch into the plastic housing of the unit, and access to that small little insert point is very limited and awkward. Who the heck thought that would be helpful?) This unit has a large footfrint (much more so than my beloved yet aged HP 1210 all-in-one). I'm going to see if I can salvage my old HP and get a few more months out of that one. This Epson is going back into the closet, and most likely I'll end up donating it to the Salvation Army. An unpleasant experience that makes me want to avoid Epson products in the future.
