Inpatient Obstetric Nursing

The book was supposed to be a review for the certification exam but I took the test and nothing that I studied in the book was on the test and I went through the entire book. It was a waste of my time and money.

Outdated, poorly edited-- and just plain wrong!

5/17/2007

The authors have us separating babies from their mothers, withholding nourishment for twelve hours if the babies are well and twenty-four hours if not, washing them in hexachlorophene, and leaving them to shiver at a "normal" (rectal) temperature post-birth of 96F.

Also, the format includes many double negatives and other 'tricky' question formats no longer in use. Overall, format is not reflective of the actual exam format.
Content is also outdated- new evidence on disease process and current therapies is missing-- and the significant advances of nursing as a profession not reflected.
And-- the editors missed some salient errors. One question asks what the nurse should do when the mother becomes cross after "twelve" hours of pushing.

Current evidence overwhelmingly agrees:
Babies should go to breast as soon as possible after birth, should never be separated from mom unless absolutely necessary, are not dirty and don't need a bath til they've settled in, and regulate temperature, heart-rate, and breathing by being continuously skin to skin with their mothers.

NLC- a total update is needed. I am amazed this was published in 2005.

not what I expected

8/22/2006

This a good book in general if you want to rate your knowledge. If your taking the NCC Inpatient OB Nursing Certification Exam this will not help you. The test is more factual. This book is more on nursing care and actions that you would take in patient care situations.

Inpatient Obstetric Nursing

I would not recommend this review book because of the numerous errors that are in the book. 1. The set up of the questions is not at all representative of the questions that are on the NCC exam. The test does not have "all of the above" or "none of the above" nor does it contain 4 choices for each question. 2. The worst part of the book was the last section on Obstetrical Nursing Care. It is outdated information and would be misleading to the candidate taking the exam. Of major concern is the section on the newborn where it states that the baby should be NPO for 12 hours - and the preterm for 24 hours! 3. There are no references. I am very disappointed with this book and will not use it and not recommend this to others. I don't know who the "National Learning Corporation" is, but I would recommend to them to remove this book from their name.

Inpatient Obstetrics Nursing

The practice tests are excellent in order to refresh and improve
test taking skills .

It is a helpful tool to evaluate weak spots and stregth areas.

Do not like the fact that sections are labeled symply as test 1 and test 2. there are no titles or names to reference the test
ie: labor and delivery section or electronic fetal monitoring.

There are no consecutive page numbers ie; 1-200. Book section must be marked in order to return to a section if one needs to put the book away for a period of time then return to it,

Some of the questions are ambiguous but cannot really evaluate that until I take the NCC exam and evaluate their style of questioning.

overall I am happy with the book and reccomend it to my co workers.
