When I got Creator 8 I needed the dual layer burning feature. Now I need HD video burning, better music and video features, and portable device conversions. That's the reason I upgraded to Creator 2009. Like others I wonder if anyone is confused with the dropping of the version numbers and using

First Off, the system is picky about which computer is running the system and which is not when you set it up. It will spend minutes sending you back and forth between a tutorial 'I have the cable, how do I use it?' without getting to a menu cue that takes you to the next stage of file selection.

What an insightful writer Thomas Friedman is!! In this latest book he shares many observations and ideas that I hope are noted by the voters of the USA and the decision makers of not just the United States but of the world.

Product Description:

The Linksys Wireless-G access point lets you connect Wireless-G (802.11g ) or Wireless-B (802.11b) devices to your network. Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate your network clients to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

For more information on the differences between an access point and a router with access point, see the following table:

access point vs. routerTo protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G access point can encrypt all wireless transmissions. The MAC address filter lets you decide exactly who has access to your wireless network. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.

Wireless-G is the upcoming 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's almost five times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country--but since they share the same 2.4 GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also work with existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

Future-proof your wireless network with the Linksys Wireless-G access point. You'll enjoy Wireless-B connectivity today, and be prepared for a high-speed Wireless-G tomorrow.

The Linksys Wireless-G access point is compatible with Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP.

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

  • 802.11b
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11g

LINKSYS WAP54G - Wireless-G is the emerging 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's almost five times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B ( 802.11b ) products found in homes, businesses and public wireless hotspots around the country. The best part is, since they share the same 2.4GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices talk to existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

easy setup
8/28/2008
I was wanting to be able to install the network without using the CD. It seems like the CDs always make you install something that comes with spyware or virusware. After plugging in the Access Point to my network and not being able to find it with my laptop wireless NIC, I relented and used the CD.

No problems at all. I was setup in 2 minutes. No programs installed on my laptop, just a simple utility run only off the CD.

Works better than advertised
8/7/2008
I got this access point (AP) in order to create an ethernet connection to my old iMac G3, which does not have wireless. My in-laws have a d-link router connected to the cable modem. After some fiddling (best to read instruction manual on the CD that came with the Linksys AP), I got it to work and now the iMac is connected to the internet. I am using it as an AP client, which receives wireless signal from a router and converts it to ethernet signal. (I had to change the mode to AP client by using a Web browser at address http://192.168.1.245/) The manual says that, if used as a AP client, it works only with a Linksys router or another Linksys AP. Well, lo and behold, it can work with a d-link router as well. Extrapolating, I can say that this AP should work with any well-behaving router with the right settings.

WAP54G set was easy
7/30/2008
I bought this product over three years ago and its rock solid preformance intigated this review. I never review much and look only at the detailed ones as credible. Setup was easiest over the internet but this basically consists of linking it in and entering the IP address 192.167.1.1 and bang I was talking with the router. Security settings are easliy done too and I have 128-bit encryption running seemlessly with three wireless, one hard wired, and obe powerline ethernet connection. I have added my brothers computer by logging into the same IP address. I can't comment on 802.11-N technology but this G router has been awesome for me.

Poor software and configuration
7/30/2008
I tried to run the automatic setup more than 5 times, no luck. I then used Windows to look for the wireless network and set it up that way. I cannot log onto the access point by entering it's IP address (192.168.1.245) into a browser window. It appears to work fine, has a long wireless range but I cannot setup the wireless security.

The Linksys WAP54G is well suited for personal and SOHO use. It supports a variety of security modes, from open networking, to WAP with RADIUS authentication. Initial configuration is simple.
