Not essential, but highly recommended 9/12/2008 My mother-in-law found this product, and bought it for me because she thought it looked practical. It's a bit odd looking, but as it turns out, she was definitely on to something. This would definitely be a nice shower present if you're trying to support a friend's choice to breastfeed. I have the non-Deluxe model, but am putting my review here to try to keep it with the rest. The non-Deluxe model differs in that the strap uses only a buckle, and not velcro. I don't find that a drawback, since opening velcro tends to wake sleeping babies. I'd prefer the pouch use a snap for that reason, but it is a nice place to keep a Clif bar or lanolin cream. This pillow is sized quite generously; I'm an American size 12, and can wear it on its smallest setting. The pillow's strap lets me put it on, walk across the room, and grab the baby without having too much to juggle. It's good that the cover is washable, but getting it on and off the foam is a pain, so I put a receiving blanket or towel over the pillow, which handles spitup and newborn diaper blowouts quite nicely. It also lets me wrap my son up and place him in his cradle with minimal disturbance. While this isn't an essential item, it is a really nice one. Using it has allowed me to nurse one-handed and use the computer with the other, which does a lot for sanity when dealing with a frequent eater. Because it's so firm and flat, my son can nurse, nap a bit, and then wake up and nurse again, all while I check email. The back support is quite comfy, too. Thank You. Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: Great for breastfeeding beginners! 8/29/2008 We got this at our baby shower and I kept on using it until a few days ago - our baby just turned 4 weeks :-). It really helps in latching the baby on and seems comfortable for him. Also, especially if it is a "big boy", like ours, having him on it makes it easier to hold him. BUT: while it is not rocket science to put it on, it takes some "experience" to do it one handed, with the baby in the other... I sure would recommend it at least until the new mom figures out how to nurse the "relaxed" way, with the baby in your lap. Thank You. Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: Love it! 7/7/2008 I love this product for breast feeding my little one. I feel that she is safe and secure when she is on the pillow. It also puts her in the perfect position for the cross cradle hold. I couldn't use this for football hold because it was hard to turn in sideways and fit in a chair. I have recommended this product to other expecting mothers. It makes breastfeeding more comfortable. Another positive is that it is wide enough for her to fall asleep on after feeding (while still being held of course!) Thank You. Was this review helpful?
2 of 6 people found the following review helpful: Don't believe the hype 6/26/2008 I, too, bought this at the recommendation of the lactation consultant I met during my hospital tour, and it was essentially worthless to me. It was too painful to use after my unplanned c-section, and once I started using the Boppy pillow to nurse, I never was able to get excited about the My Brest Friend- to many moving part to get situation for nursing. I read one review that said that the Boppy was "not made for nursing." Come on! From the way some "experts" talk about the importance of proper positioning babies for nursing, you might wonder how poor women in third world countries manage to nurse their babies- the pillows are not necessary, but they are nice to have, and selling them as more than that is really disingenuous. I think lactation consultants can be great, but there are a disappointing number of them that I and my friends have run across who create more stress for new mothers than they solve by having so many rigid rules- if it works, and the baby is getting milk, and you're both comfortable, isn't that enough? For the money, comfort, and convenience, I'd say take the Boppy over the MBF any day- and don't let the nursing snobs out there talk you into something you don't want. Thank You. 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful: go to gift for new parents 5/13/2008 Much nicer than the boppy, because it doesn't slip off. The velcro is noisy, when you have to take it off, but you can always put sleeping baby down, leave the room and then take it off. The fabulous thing about this, is you could even walk around and nurse! The firm platform is a really secure place to position baby, though a football hold is difficult except for the smallest. But then in a football hold, your arm is required to do the job in any case. Also the generous size of the platform worked for my extremely large chest size which just balooned after baby. The boppy just slipped off and didn't clear my chest. I especially appreciated that back support in the small of my back and it complemented my dutailier rockers shape perfectly when that extra support for the small of your back comes in handy. The washable cover is fantastic and my first one, lasted, me, and s-i-l through three babies and several years. Thank You. Was this review helpful?
