Product Description:

Magnolia grandiflora. Common Names: southern magnolia, bull bay. Family: Magnoliaceae (magnolia Family). Description: Southern magnolia is a large, broad-leafed evergreen tree that can grow 60-90 ft (18-27 m) in height with a trunk up to 2-3 ft (0.6-0.9 m) in diameter. It's trunk is typically straight and erect with spreading branches that form a dense, broadly pyramidal crown. The evergreen leaves are large 5-8 in (13-20 cm) long, leathery and dark glossy green above with rusty, velveteen undersides. Southern magnolia has large, showy white flowers that are 8-12 in (20-30 cm) in diameter. These have a pleasant fragrance and appear throughout the spring and summer. The fruits are reddish-brown conelike structures, 2-4 in (5-10 cm) long, with bright red kidney shaped seeds that hang from little threads when fully mature in autumn. Location: This native American tree occurs on the coastal plain from North Carolina, south to central Florida, and west to east Texas. Magnolia grandiflora grows best along streams and near swamp margins in moist, fertile soils, in association with American beech (Fagus grandiflora), sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), and various oaks. This spectacular tree is beloved by gardeners and planted all over the world wherever it can be grown. Light: Full sun to partial shade. Moisture: Southern magnolia is extremely drought tolerant. It does best, however, in rich, well-drained, acidic soils. Hardiness: USDA Zones 7-9. The starter tree you will receive is growing in a 4 inch pot. They are about 8" tall.

Disappointed

Not what I ordered

7/28/2010

The tree was very small and it was not the grandiflora I sent a email to discuss the place wanted us to take a picture of the product and email it back; of course no one from that company got back with me. I will never purchase anything from them and would not recommend using them at all

Stuck

Big Mistake

6/30/2010

I ordered these trees and received them in a timely manner. I planted them as directed even tho they did not look too good. In the next two weeks all the leaves turned brown and fell off. I really don't even think they were the variety of Magnolia that I ordered. I sent multiple Emails to the company that sent me the trees. I got no responce at all.. I would never order anything from them again and in fact I have not ordered anything else on Amazon. I see no way to get Amazon involved in a dispute with retailers. Maybe if that was possible this type of bad sale could be weeded out. Too bad.

NOT a Bonsai tree

6/16/2010

I ordered this plant expecting a bonsai which it is not! Upon receiving this sad little magnolia sapling, I immediately contacted the seller thinking they sent the wrong item. But instead I was informed that it is the only size they carry and "can be planted outside or grown as a bonsai". Since I'm not an expect bonsai grower and don't have a clue how to turn a full size sapling into a miniature tree, and it'll cost me half it's price to return it, I guess I'll pamper it inside until it's old enough to withstand a NJ winter. If it lives since the leaves are not healthy looking but instead are yellowing and have black spots.
