This book is pretty good and won't likely dissapoint Artemis Fowl fans. It has the usual entertaining elements of the other stories in the series. But for fans of Nathanial Parker, who identified heavily with the characters in part created by his superb narrating abilities, it will be an adjustment

A friend had recommended I see The Secret, so I purchased it through Amazon.com. I watched a good portion of it, but I kept getting phone calls and other distractions so I finally gave up and put it away to finish another time. The more I thought about the message in The Secret however, the more I

It's a good sturdy, comfortable wrist strap, and I like the fact that the main part detaches from the part that loops through the hole, making it easier to insert. My only complaint is that the part that actually threads through the hole in the camera seems a bit thin - but so far it is holding up

Product Description:

In perhaps the most important parenting book of the decade, Dr. Harvey Karp reveals an extraordinary treasure sought by parents for centuries --an automatic “off-switch” for their baby’s crying.

No wonder pediatricians across the country are praising him and thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Pierce Brosnan, have turned to him to learn the secrets for making babies happy.

Never again will parents have to stand by helpless and frazzled while their poor baby cries and cries. Dr. Karp has found there IS a remedy for colic. “I share with parents techniques known only to the most gifted baby soothers throughout history …and I explain exactly how they work.”

In a innovative and thought-provoking reevaluation of early infancy, Dr. Karp blends modern science and ancient wisdom to prove that newborns are not fully ready for the world when they are born. Through his research and experience, he has developed four basic principles that are crucial for understanding babies as well as improving their sleep and soothing their senses:

??The Missing Fourth Trimester: as odd as it may sound, one of the main reasons babies cry is because they are born three months too soon.

??The Calming Reflex: the automatic reset switch to stop crying of any baby in the first few months of life.

??The 5 “S’s”: the simple steps (swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing, swinging and sucking) that trigger the calming reflex. For centuries, parents have tried these methods only to fail because, as with a knee reflex, the calming reflex only works when it is triggered in precisely the right way. Unlike other books that merely list these techniques Dr. Karp teaches parents exactly how to do them, to guide cranky infants to calm and easy babies to serenity in minutes…and help them sleep longer too.

??The Cuddle Cure: the perfect mix the 5 “S’s” that can soothe even the most colicky of infants.

In the book, Dr. Karp also explains:

What is colic?

Why do most babies get much more upset in the evening?

How can a parent calm a baby--in mere minutes?

Can babies be spoiled?

When should a parent of a crying baby call the doctor?

How can a parent get their baby to sleep a few hours longer?

Even the most loving moms and dads sometimes feel pushed to the breaking point by their infant’s persistent cries. Coming to the rescue, however, Dr. Karp places in the hands of parents, grandparents, and all childcare givers the tools they need to be able to calm their babies almost as easily as…turning off a light.

The 1st Book You Need
9/4/2008
This book is the 1st book you should read when coming home from the hospital (or shortly before having the baby). I had a very fussy baby and the soothing techniques shared in this book are an amazing education on how to care for a fussy child when nothing else works. The results are immediate. This book gave me the knowledge that boosted my confidence and made me more capable of caring for my child.

Pros- Invaluable soothing techniques and easy to understand definition on colic
Cons- None

Might be good if your baby is colicky
8/30/2008
I bought this book when I was still pregnant and did my best to get through it. That was difficult because it is incredibly repetitive. I don't need to be told something multiple times. He could tell you everything once and this book would be much more useful and only 10 pages long. I already knew the basics and thought this book would enlighten me. It didn't. It bored me. And, as it turned out, my son wasn't a crier so the information in it was completely useless to me. If you already have a colicky infant and have tried everything else, you might consider this book but otherwise, I'd save yourself some money and avoid it.

One idea, lots of fluff...
8/29/2008
I have no idea how come so many intelligent people like this book and talk about it like it's the discovery of the century. There is ONE idea in the book (the fourth trimester) and one practical set of advice summarized in 5 words: swaddle, swing, shush, side and suck. The rest is fluff. The whole amount of information could have been fit on one index card, no need for a book.
Maybe the structure of the book works best if you are reading it already sleep deprived and your brain cannot handle complex sentences and you actually need all that repetitive stuff.
So, bottom line: swaddle your child, stick a pacifier in his/her mouth, rock the baby in your arms and sooth him/her by shushing (I really don't buy the author's suggestion that a roaring vacuum cleaner is the next best thing to the noises of the womb).

No new news
8/25/2008
I was disappointed in this book. All it has to offer are the 5 s's which don't take up a whole book to understand. Additionally, if you've taken a child birth class you were most likely taught the 5 s's. Not worth the money. Very wordy and low on information.

Great book for newborns
8/24/2008
I bought this book with a bunch of other books, I'm due in two months so I haven't actually tried any of Dr. Karps techniques but the book was super easy to read, and had some really interesting techniques that I'm dying to try now! :-)
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, especially for first time parents.
