My Neighbor Totoro
Sad Face
I ordered this product and got a tracking number. When I checked with USPS, the package was marked delivered, but, sadly, it never arrived. This is one of my absolute favorite movies, and I'm sure it's no fault of the sender that the package never made it to my house. I suppose it either got lost in the mail, or somebody in the Postal personnel decided to swipe it. Wish I'd had a better experi

Salem's Lot
Not bad for 79 TV
In the many ways horror television was hampered in the 70's regarding horror, it's surprising this 2 parter was so successful at the creep out. Since the grue had to be downplayed, Tobe Hooper and crew relied on mood and implication. And considering the standards and practices albatross around his neck, did a really good job.
I thought that David Soul was perfectly cast, and even thou

Lovely
I like this as a classic musical. The songs fit well with the dialogue and story. The costumes are incredible. This has always been a favorite remake of Pygmalion set to music.

Brideshead Revisited, Books 1-6
Badly in need of subtitles
MARVELOUS STORY AND BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHY BUT LACKING SUBTITLES. HAD DIFFICULTY UNDERSTANDING SOME OF FLAT ENGLISH ACCENT DIALOGUE, ESPECIALLY JEREMY IRONS WHO SPEAKS IN A VERY LOW REGISTER. TURNING UP THE VOLUME DID NOT HELP AS DIALOGUE WAS COMPETING WITH BACKGROUND MUSIC. DO NOT HAVE HEARING PROBLEMS BUT THIS STORY WAS A CHALLENGE TO FOLLOW AT TIMES.

The Punisher
Punisher Blu-Ray Review
Okay this was a good movie, not mind blowing, but definitely gritty. In my book, this deserved a sequel and not the train wreck that is "War Zone".
* * * * * Blu-Ray Review * * * * *
This release falls short.
LionsGate should have polished the film for the HD release. I imagine they ported the exact DVD release. There are no trailers or extras, just a "Blu-Ray Ex

Bubblegum Crisis 1
Popular and Terribly Overrated
I'll admit, I just started sampling anime from the Mecha genre, and I don't really have a lot of experience with it. However, I've been watching anime for a long time, so I have a lot to compare this to. I was born in 1982, and I have a pretty good understanding of 80's culture, so I had the capacity to appreciate this series while overlooking some of its outmoded gimmicks. I'll list the flaws of

High School Confidential
Just Say No, Right?
Mary Jane, weed, tea, ganja, herb, stick and so on. Every generation (which should tell us something) has its own code words for its recreational drugs. But wait a minute. Drugs, especially marijuana, are bad for you right. Why? Marijuana is the first step on the slippery slope down the road to serious drug addiction- heroin, opium, crack and so on. And then on to a life of crime and jail. Is this

Fantasia 2000 (Walt Disney Pictures Presents)
Not as good as the original
The original Fantasia is two hours long. Fantasia 2000 is only 75 minutes long. Sure, it's more attention-grabbing, but this is even less compelling than the original.
Beethoven's 5th is underused (only four minutes worth of music compared to the twenty minutes of the 6th). The second movement of "Pines of Rome" by Ottonio Respighi is entirely cut out. WHY? The Finale to "Carnival of

The Last of the Mohicans (THX Widescreen Edition)
Epic Hollywood Film Set In The French And Indian W
Nathaniel (Daniel Day-Lewis) falls in love with Cora (Madeleine Stowe), while serving as a guide for the British army during the French and Indian War. On the plus side, the cinematography is gorgeous and the story maintains a reasonable degree of historical accuracy, at least by Hollywood standards. But this is also "epic filmaking" at it's most melodramatic and overwrought. For example, there is

To Kill a Mockingbird
A Movie for its time, but not All-Time...
A movie that is just plain well-acted. The ensemble supports Mr. Gregory Peck as if his life depended on it. Mr. Brock Peters becomes more than the average mongrel can stand: an innocent man of a shade other than pink, and justice won't be served because of the mongrels. But criticizing this film would be like shooting a mockingbird, wouldn't it? This is another dumbed-down attempt at looking at t

What's Love Got To Do With It?
Feels a little like condensed soup...
There is a growing problem with biopics of this nature. They either feel overly stuffed (since these performers lives were really so rich with color) or they feel a little too airy since everything tends to get glossed over too quickly. With `What's Love Got to Do with It', the former is most definitely the case. Instead of feeling as if we really get to know Tina Turner we are left wondering w

The Terminator
Don't get the Blu-ray version.
Terminator is one of the most important sci-fi/action classics in American film history. I am a big fan. I want to warn every potential purchaser of the Blu-ray version, however, of the fact that it does not provide anything close to HD imagery as a result of the deterioration of the original film stock over the past 25 years. In fact, the picture is so fuzzy that it is not even DVD quality. Save

Kissing Jessica Stein
Solid
KJS was directed by Charles Herman-Wurmfeld, but written by Heather Juergensen & Jennifer Westfeldt, who star in the film as New Yorkers Jessica Stein & Helen Cooper. Despite the lesbianism there is little T&A- the leads are rather frumpy, but not unattractive, women. The story is every lesbian's fantasy- seducing a clueless straight girl fed up with the male sex. This banal premise goes nowhere.

Mouchette
Self-indulgent for the cast and crew
There is nothing in this movie that will entertain you. Students of cinema rejoice. You can observe fine acting, fine directing and fine cinamatography but you will not be distracted by the story. 5 stars for performances, etc; 1 star for the telling of a foreboding story of despair and 0 stars for entertainment. I typcally appreciate Bresson and seem to understand the movies...not Mouchette.

The Searchers
Mediocre
Films, like artists or authors, tend to have their critical reputations wax and wane through a few cycles until a consensus is finally reached. Of course, consensus has little to do with real world excellence or failure, but as good an example of this trend as can be shown certainly is John Ford's famed 1956 John Wayne Western, The Searchers. Upon its initial release, the film made a solid profi

Sometimes a Great Notion
Great Cast of Characters (but read the book instea
It took me weeks to read all 628 pages of this book, all the time looking forward to seeing the film. On one hand, the cast was wonderful - especially Henry Fonda and Paul Newman, as father and son. It would be practically impossible for any group of filmmakers and actors to translate the magic found within the pages of the book onto the silver screen. While I salute and commend the people behind

WARNING! Spoiler Alert - Am I the only one who feels sorry for that cute little female squirrel that becomes infatuated with the transformed young Arthur only to have her heart broken when he's turned human again? As silly as this may seem, this is the one reason why I do NOT like this film. Yes, there is a tough life lesson to be learned in this sequence and yes it is a testament to the effective

Three Kings (Collector's Edition)
Loud shoot-em-up
Post Gulf War tale of three US soldiers who plan a heist of Kuwait gold stolen by Saddam. Quick cutting makes for quick action. The morality at the center is the meat of the movie. Clooney is pretty good, and Ice Cube is the new Jim Brown. Less overall than it could have been. Filmed in Arizona, but pretty convincing scenery.

Casino Royale (The Collector's Edition)
The First Bond Movie, Ever
Many think that Sean Connery was the first actor to impersonate the role of the sophisticated British agent; when in fact he wasn't. Sean was the first actor to play bond in a "theatrical" movie. But in 1954, 8 years before Dr. No hit the screens, 007 was introduced for the first time on Television broadcast.
The movie was called Casino Royale, based on the first novel by Ian Fleming

The Lion King II: Simba's Pride
Better than average Disney sequel
The Lion King is one of the greatest animated films ever to grace the silver screen. In my opinion, it battles it out for the top spot with Beauty and the Beast and maybe Toy Story. Everything about it was beautifully created-- the animation (who could ever forget the famous stampede), the music (Circle of Life, Be Prepared, Can you feel the love tonight are among Disney's best), the story (taking

Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella" was originally written in 1957 as a television showcase for Julie Andrews. That original live broadcast was seen by an estimated 107 million viewers. The charming musical's reputation was nearly destroyed by an embarrasingly amateurish 1965 TV remake featuring Lesley Ann Warren. It is this version, unfortunately, that was videotaped and shown on TV for severa
