4-year-olds will know lots of things you don't

My niece is 4 and told me other night all about marsupials. They've got pouches, she said, and a lot of them live in Australia. The mother marsupial carries the baby in her pouch. Penguins are another thing she's mastered. The daddy penguin carries the egg between its feet, and you might think they live at the North Pole but you'd be wrong. Penguins live at the South Pole ("that's Antarctica" she says) and POLAR BEARS live at the North Pole (I knew that, really). When reading aloud from Your Big Backyard (which I was never really that into as a child, being a Cricket fan from the start), I often find myself fading away midsentence to go "Huh! How interesting!" only to look over and find the niece tapping her fingers in impatience.

If you have a nature/science oriented little one, or even if you don't, try Your Big Backyard. The pictures are fun, the games are entertaining, the Bonnie and Chester stories allow for an interactive bedtime story (albeit a tiny bit too cheesy), and the animal info is so matter-of-fact, that you'll find yourself with your mouth hanging open as little Ritchie informs Jane the grocery store checkout clerk everything he knows about the life cycle of bats.

Don't feel bad. At least you know how to tie your shoes.

5 stars for Your Big Backyard!

I remember as a child looking through at the beautiful photography and great articles of Your Big Backyard. Now, I'm a teacher, and would recommend it to anyone who has kids who love animals and nature!

good for advetorous yuth souls

I used to read this all the time. I may not still get it, but, after AWHILE it gets to babish. I got it years ago. I'd give/recomned it for kids from zero to seven or so. It's ok,really!!!!!! I liked it for SO LONG I just HALF TO GIVE IT 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great magazine

My 5 year-old urban-born son loves this magazine. The pictures, stories and information about wild animals and their habitats are fun to read and he learns a lot in the process.

My son loves it!

We're on our second year of this magazine, and every issue gets read cover-to-cover, at least 3 times, and he won't let me throw any of them away, even the old ratty ones. I wish that it went into more detail about some of the animals - what they eat, what the do, stuff like that, rather than just "this is a ____". (There is detail about many of the animals, but sometimes there's just a picture with the name.) Other than that, though, I'd say it's great. The activities are easy enough for a 4-year-old to do and understand, and I have a couple of encyclopedias where we go look up the animal when more information is desired, which is often. He's showing an early interest in animals of all kinds, so this was a perfect gift for him from his godmother.
