80 of 88 people found the following review helpful: disappointing 11/29/2002 We subscribed to this magazine for a year, but I decided one year was enough. Although the photographs were excellent and some of the articles were interesting, they tended to be very short and superficial, even for young children. I did not like the two page "game" from Playhouse Disney which was really a two page advertisement for a television show. I also did not like the stories and the Bonnie and Chester adventures because the animals did not behave like animals, living in houses like people, wearing clothing, and eating cake. I was looking for a magazine that would encourage children to observe nature in their own backyards and help them understand the natural world. Thank You. Was this review helpful?
162 of 164 people found the following review helpful: If I had to pick just one magazine, this would be it. 10/8/2002 If your child is facinated with animals, or likes the outdoors, this is a FANTASTIC magazine for emergent or pre-readers. Very well done, it is crammed with great facts and engaging pictures. When they are old enough, the switch to Ranger Rick is easy since the similar format and excellence in education keep them stimulated and engaged. Magazines are just as useful for promoting literacy as books. In some ways they are even more exciting; a new issue each month has my nephews scrambling to puzzle out the words, and have the stories read to them. After a few short weeks, the glossy magazine is tattered and dogeared, but still holds their interest. If I had to pick just one magazine for young children, this would be it. Great magazine!!! 15 of 15 people found the following review helpful: My Son Loves Big Backyard 8/2/2002 My son loves this magazine and we read it every night at bedtime (the same one over and over again until the next issue comes). He goes to sleep with it in is hands, and we find it right there next to him in the morning. The pictures and stories are great and we have found he has shown interest in different parts of the magazine as he has matured. Excellent value. Thank You. Was this review helpful?

I can honestly say that these magazines are looked at time and again and she is always excited to see the next one show up in the mail. I wouldn't hesitate recommending this magaine to parents for thier kids. I've learned a few things myself in reading it to her! Thank You. Was this review helpful?

It is the best child's magazine I have seen for Preschoolers. It has a variety of activities including art, outdoor/indoor, animal-related, mind stimulating (puzzles, etc.), and stories. We read this magazine together when she rides the train with me to work. I keep several in my bag because they are each so full of facts about animals -- both domesticated and wildlife, their habitat, and our world in general. We both learn the answers to common questions about featured animals from kids 3-7. It contains high quality, well written articles for children, excellent photographs, and colorful graphics.
