Goal setting for success

Monday, July 27th, 2009

One of the habits common to most successful people is that of writing down their goals.

Many individuals own up to having goals, but most do not actually put them down on paper. According to a poll on Success magazine, that is the most prevalent trend.

Those who keep a daily planner and write down their daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals are far more likely to actually achieve them. Those who keep their goals only in their minds tend to get off track very easily.

No matter whether you write your goals down in your Handheld Pdas, smart phone, Blackberry Phones or in an old-fashioned day planner, the important thing is to be able to see them frequently. That way you can establish a plan of small steps that will take you to achieving your heart’s desire.

If you break your long-term goal into doable steps and set deadlines and most important –meet those deadlines – you will be surprised to find that those goals were simple to reach Maybe not easy, but simple, yes.

If say, your long-term goal is to write a book for example, set a time frame for that. If it is one year, and your book is to have 12 chapters that means you will have to write one chapter a month. Decide how many pages each chapter will have and work out how many pages you will have to write per week. Then, on your planner, check off your daily goal when you meet it. By the end of the year, you will have written a book as opposed to just thinking about it.
It works if you work it!

Moonlighting opportunities to increase your income

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

The slash in work week hours and layoffs are causing many people to seek alternative sources of income. Many people are going back to moonlighting, not to support a possible career in the arts, but because they need the cash. We need the cash!

One of the fastest growing industry in this arena is that of direct sales or network marketing. If worked consistently, this is a very viable source of extra income.

Most direct sales companies operate on the foundation of home parties, where a group of women usually, gather to listen to a presentation about a product and then are invited to browse the catalog or display and place an order.

The hostess gets some kind of a reward in the form of free items or a discount in exchange. All she has to do is invite her friends, serve Gourmet Food and drinks and sit back and enjoy the company.

Things to take into account if you are considering trying direct sales. Find a product you really enjoy and believe in. Although it is possible to sell something you are not particularly crazy about, if you are a user and a big fan you will find it a lot easier to enthuse other people. After all that is what you do every day: recommend things to your friends that you use and like yourself.

Make sure you can afford the initial investment or at least have a plan to recoup your investment fast and then start making money. Keep in mind that the people who claim they have a basement full of a product they never sold may not be a reflection of the product, but of human nature: the unwillingness to do anything in their power to make their home-based business work.

Keep in mind that direct sales only works if you work it. There is no magic in it. If you don’t try to sell the product, it will not sell itself.

Successful job hunting

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

The professional world is increasingly competitive – jobs are fewer and far between and people looking for them are on the rise.

What can you do to maximize your opportunities for a positive outcome? First of all, make sure you have frequent access to Hp Desktop Pc and a phone line. At home is best, but if you have to, go to the library and plan to spend a few hours online every day. You should have at least a Cell Phone to be able to receive calls from prospective employers. Turn job-hunting into your current job, until you land one.

Have your CV always updated and make sure it has no spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes or typos. Even when your first choice for work is to stay within your field of expertise, try to think outside of the box and consider not only your accreditations, but your skills and experience when it comes to job-hunting.

What fields could your command of two languages be useful in? If you have good communication skills and are a people person, you may want to consider sales, even if you have never done it before.
If money is tight and you need to make some cash fast, consider alternative modes of income such as offering consulting services, joining a direct sales company or tutoring.

The more flexible you are as far as relocating, job shifts and accommodating to a new work environment, the greater your chances of getting a job faster. Always be ready to do more than is expected of you, and you will eventually be able to demand more.

If you do not land the position of your dreams, but do get job offers, take one and always keep in mind that it is temporary and that every single work experience is a stepping-stone for the next one.

No late fees DVDs

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

In an effort to pare down my fixed expenses, I do not have cable at home, even though I have two kids under the age of 10. This has helped promote their creativity since they are forced to entertain themselves as opposed to being entertained passively by the TV screen.

However, I enjoy movies as a treat and so do they. To this end, we go to the local library and check out DVDs that are free, if you turn them in on time that is. Unlike books, which we can check out for 3 weeks at our local branch, DVDs can be kept for a few days. It often happens that we can’t find the disc or that we forget to return it on time. Then we are plagued by late fees that, in some instances, would have bought us a new movie to keep forever.

I tried several DVD rental options for a time, but in the end always returned to my first choice, that was Netflix Coupons, one of the first companies to offer DVD rental services by mail. Their no-late-fee policy has been my lifesaver over and over, and if we have misplaced a DVD and want to rent a new one, we report it as lost and when we finally find it, I send it in. No questions asked, prompt delivery and pick up in the regular mail and we save money on gas and save time since we can browse the movies online and we can even stream movies using the “watch instantly” option.

In my case the option where you can have 3 movies out at one time works best since we are a household of 3. I considered doing away with the monthly expense, but after having to pay late fees even at the library, I discovered I was actually saving money by using Netflix Promo Codes.

Flying with young kids

Friday, July 17th, 2009

If you have young children, even though traveling with them may seem like a hassle, keep in mind that they travel for free until they are 2 years of age (but they do pay taxes). They will have to sit on your lap, or if the flight is international and you are able to sit on a bulkhead seat, the airline may set up a cot for the baby, as long as it is up to around 8 months old.

If there is enough room on the plane, even if you did not pay for a seat for the baby, and if you are a mom traveling alone with kids, they will usually try to accommodate you so that you can all sit comfortably. After all, comfortable kids are usually quieter than when they are feeling cooped up. So, even if you are a new mom, try to log in your flying miles while your kids are very young, as air traveling as a family will soon become quite expensive, even for a small family.

My family is scattered around the globe and I enjoy flexible vacations because I am self-employed. This means I can punch in my desired destinations, which are usually in Europe and in the U.S. – mainly San Francisco – into travel websites such as Travelocity and receive e-mail alerts when the price dips below what I entered as the maximum I am willing to pay. By using Travelocity Coupons you can also avail discounts.

Even if it seems too early, now is the time to use travel websites to enter your travel dates and destinations for Thanksgiving and even Christmas. If you can wing it, know that the cheapest months to travel are usually from February to April and September to November, excluding Thanksgiving.

My sister, a frequent flyer, says she gets the best deals at orbitz by using Orbitz Promo Codes, but maybe she says that because the has their credit card, and she accrues points by booking through them!

An Apple Mac convert

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Being a writer and journalist, I have always preferred Laptop Computers over desktop. Every time I saw an Apple computer I balked, because they were known for their incompatibility issues with PCs and most people owned a PC anyhow, so I just went with the crowd. Also, Apple has always been a lot more expensive than regular computers.

Another reason to stick with the tried and true. After all, I had never had my laptop crash and I managed to have one that lasted five years, after which I sold it on eBay for a reasonable amount. So far, so good.

However, I recently owned a PC that crashed several times, even though I supposedly had one of the best anti-viruses installed in it. Naturally I had failed to back-up a lot of my work, even though I am in the habit of e mailing to myself the documents I am currently writing to my web-based e mail account, so that can recover them if need be.
I even used an online storage site that changed names on me and eventually closed down (deleting all my file along with those of all the other users).

When the only option became to use the glitchy Windows Vista on a new laptop or upgrade to a MacBook, I took a chance and went for the latter. The first few weeks I thought I had surely made a mistake, since there is a real learning curve when using an Apple computer for the first time. Everything that was second-nature to me on a regular PC had to be relearned and I did not have the time or disposition to attend one of the free tutorials Apple offers at its stores.

However, two months into my Apple MacBook Pro MA895LL experience, I must say I appreciate that it is so small and light and fast, compared to my old laptop, and to almost any other laptop I encounter. I don’t need an antivirus and I am so used to typing on my Mac that when I go back to a regular keyboard, I can’t type as easily. I am a Mac convert now, but that doesn’t mean I have sworn off PCs forever …

Outdoor family fun

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

When considering fun activities for the summer, before the kids are due back in school, think of games you can play as a family.

You don’t have to be good at any of these. All you need is the predisposition to have fun and to enjoy yourselves while keeping your heart rate up.

Physical activity is the best way to have fun and interact while keeping fit. Partner or team outdoor games such as racquetball, badminton, lawn games and volleyball all involve little gear but a lot of body movement. Basketball Products, soccer, football and T-ball are games you can add to your summer to-do list.

Water polo, diving games or any other pool activity are excellent choices to keep the family entertained and in shape.

If you want to bond with your kids, don’t just watch them Skateboarding, rollerblade or bike-ride. Get yourself some wheels too and join in the fun.

Make sure you have all the required body protections in case you take a fall – you don’t want to end up with a fractured hip – but do your best to participate. That will keep you feeling and looking young, while keeping your kids out of trouble and involved in activities with you.

Another option is to sign up to classes together. Tennis, swimming and karate can be learned together. Do not let age or the shape you are in determine your level of involvement with your kids this summer.
If you don’t have children, then borrow your nephews or nieces, or your best friend’s kids and hang out with them while engaging in sports.

You will feel renewed and will be more likely to have fun the way kids do … for the sake of it, instead of striving to become good at something, which can add pressure and take away from your enjoyment.

Tips to photograph your kids

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

If you are able to enjoy some downtime in the summer, a good summer hobby to pursue is photography. Subjects and time to do it abound.

With modern Digital Cameras and computer photo touch-up programs, photography can open a whole new doorway to your creative side.

If you are a mom or dad, hanging out at the poolside or at the beach with your kids offers all kinds of possibilities to catch them at their best and at their funniest.

One of the secrets of professional photographers is that to get one good shot, they take hundreds of frames and then choose only the best. They then retouch it, enhance it and airbrush it until it looks good to them.

You can do this too. All you need is time and patience and the will to follow your kids around for a while, camera in hand. The best snapshots are candid and taken when your baby has ice-cream all over her face, or falls asleep while having dinner.

If your camera has the option of shooting several frames non-stop, use it for action pictures, such as when the kids are diving in the pool or your hubby gets pushed in the water fully clothed. This feature enabled me to document in pictures my eldest daughter’s first steps. If you can afford one, a Waterproof Digital Camera will provide even more versatility and fun.

In order to take the best underwater pictures, make sure you are wearing goggles. Otherwise you will end up with too many snapshots of the pool wall! This happened to me while trying to capture the smiles of my kiddos underwater with my naked eye!

Back to School Season Preparations

Monday, July 13th, 2009

If your kids are unable to attend a summer camp this year due to budgetary constraints, the upcoming Back to School Season may either seem extremely appealing to them or the contrary.

Days filled with unstructured activities, no schedules or strict bedtimes may bore kids to the point of wanting to return to the classroom. On the other hand, so much freedom may be tough to give up as September comes around (mid-August for some states, such as Florida).

In order to prepare your kids for the upcoming school season Hannah Montana Educational Supplies are suitable option, you may want to start incorporating some structured activities into their day.

You don’t have to jam-pack their days with home-schooled lessons. However, having a regular bedtime schedule (even if it is later than usual) and fixed breakfast, lunch and dinner times may help ease into the stricter calendar and schedule for the rest of the year.

Make sure your school-aged children read books for at least half an hour every day. Whether it is during quiet time after lunch or at bedtime, reading should be a non-negotiable daily activity. If you read too, your kids will be more likely to indulge in books for learning and for sheer pleasure.

As August comes closer, another daily half hour of writing would also come in handy. Whether you practice dictating to your kids, spelling words or writing a short composition or story, they will benefit greatly from this summer practice.

Make sure they write slowly and with care, to ensure good penmanship. In the modern age of keyboards, writing by hand is something that must be practiced with even more emphasis than before, when it was almost the only way of writing, other than using a typewriter that not everyone had.

Try to make it enjoyable and your kids will eventually thank you for helping them get back on track for the school year.
