The Wizard of Oz is one of the books that should be required reading for children and adults of all ages, in my opinion. It contains many important life lessons such as the fact that the quest for courage, a heart and a brain always lie in our own belief that we posses these qualities.

In the book and in the movie, Dorothy, a little girl who lives in Kansas and leads a gray life, is taken by a tornado to the Land of Oz with her dog Toto. There she meets the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Lion, who are each in search of the qualities described above.

They think that The Wizard of Oz, who they are to reach by following the yellow brick road weathering all kinds of obstacles such as witches and other evil creatures, will give them what they lack.

The moral of the story is that the Wizard is just another person like them, who hides behind his identity, and again that they each possess that quality in them. They were just lacking belief in it. On the other hand it is not quite clear whether Dorothy was simply asleep and dreaming or whether she actually lives the story herself.

The movie The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary edition stars Judy Garland and is a colorful musical that brings the story to life and is yet another opportunity for those who have not read the book to enjoy the important life message the storyline conveys.
