This thing is wonderful if you can keep it clean. I bought this for my wife, a commercial pastry chef, and she rarely if ever uses it. She complains that everything sticks to it. I suggested dusting it with flour to keep that from happening but she still doesn't use it.

Do not buy this. I ordered one - was locked. Had amazon send me a replacement - also locked. These phones are useless. Don't waste your money. The advertising is not deceptive - it's simply false.

Although they make excellent writing books they are made specifically for fine art use- with heavyweight buff colored paper. The paper has excellent tooth for pencil charcoal and pastel- yet it is smooth enough and sturdy enough to accept ink drawing and light watercolor washes without buckling. 100% acid free materials stitch binding a durable elastic closure a clear envelope in the back cover and a satin book mark highlight the beautiful construction of these books. They are finished off with a hard cover that is wrapped in a fine linen book cloth. The landscape books are bound on the short side of each book; there is also a portrait book available that is bound on the long side. 128 pages. This series is available in black blue and green covers. (Picture illustrates all colors and sizes; pricing is per book and not for the entire series.)

Better than moleskine 6/5/2008 I've used both Moleskine and hand+book. Hand+book is much better. The paper holds ink better and stands up to watercolor better. Plus it is less expensive. I don't know why anyone would buy moleskine. Thank You. Was this review helpful?
Great for fountain pens 1/22/2008 I'm a fan of fountain pens, and as much as I like the idea of the Moleskine, it fell short on paper quality. Moleskine paper is too thin. My broad tipped Waterman's ink flow was much to high for the Moleskine paper to accept without bleeding. To make matters worse, the semi gloss made my Noodler's ink slow to dry. Enter Handbook Journals: The paper is more akin to mid-level watercolor paper than standard journal paper. It NEVER bleeds through and dries/absorbs very quickly. The cloth cover is very durable and the elastic is better quality than the Moleskine (it doesn't begin to sag after a while). Moleskine - look out! - Revised to Moleskine, "Don't worry!" 12/18/2007 The inside of the Hand*Book Artist Journal states "Manufactured by Global Art Materials Inc, Kansas City MO" but I noticed that the outer wrapper shows "Made in India." This made me curious to learn more about how and where these beautiful artist journals were created. After speaking to a representative from Global Art Materials, I found out that the paper is made in Argentina, where they were able to maintain a consistent acid-free quality that is of concern to the artist. A European book cloth is used, and the book is ultimately assembled in Mumbai, India. IMHO, Global Art Materials is dedicated to creating high quality artist products at a reasonable price. The paper in this journal is off-white and about 130gr. It is suitable for light watercolor washes, and I tried a number of different pens & markers on it with little to no bleed through. I believe that these journals to be an attempt to create a better artist quality product than the popular Moleskine brand- whose sketch book utilizes an ugly waxy coated oak tag type paper. {{{shudders}}} The only reason that kept me from giving this product 5 stars is the paper. It's a different paper (texture, color & thickness) than I'm used to working on. The book itself is very well made, with a beautiful cover, tight strap and is light in weight. The cloth cover is reminiscent if the Linen covered Cachet watercolor books. 05/28/08 Edited to add - After having this book for a while, I'd like to reduce my review to 2 stars. The texture of this paper just won't grow on me, and the signatures are sewed in with two small stitches that are starting to come apart. I haven't had the book that long, nor have I used it very hard. These books are cheap, and I suppose you get what you pay for. Thank You. Was this review helpful?
